Hello, my name is Dia and I love to sing. As long as I can remember, I have always sung. I sing in the morning to greet the new day, I sing at night to welcome nights dark embrace and I sing all through the day. Some people, who don’t know me, are a bit surprised when I sing to them instead of talking. Ms Chrr, the librarian, has all but banned me from the library if I continue to ask for books by singing about them.
I’m not a particularly good singer, as people have quite often told me. It’s true that the birds fly away when I try to join in their song and, when I sing at night, I hear people closing (and slamming) their windows shut, but I say each to his own regarding musical appreciation.
My greatest wish is to be a singer in a band. Not just any band, but a great band that travels the world entertaining people (although I recognise that world-wide fame would probably take a while to achieve). I know that it’s my “calling”, but so far, I haven’t found a band that has a place for me despite giving many an impromptu audition to any band members I happen to see off-stage (I even once sang to a death-metal drummer I saw having a coffee in a café, even though that’s not really my style of music).
My good friend Gui is very supportive of my endeavours, and we get together to sing into our hairbrushes at every opportunity. Gui actually has a lovely voice, and she can really sing. I think we sound excellent together. When we go to our local Karaoke bar, everyone always asks Gui to sings but she can be a bit bashful. Lucky I’m not shy at all and I’m happy to sing as many times as I can. Funny thing is, if I’m on a good run singing song after song, it seems to inspire Gui who will then get up and also sing a few numbers. She really is quite good, and the audience always call for more. I guess they recognise that she is shy and needs the encouragement.
One day (joy of joy!), I saw a fairly well-known band’s advert in the paper, calling for a new lead singer after the previous one had decided a solo career was more to her liking. I went straight around to Gui’s house and asked her to come with me to audition. I suggested that, as she could sing quite nicely, she should also try out as it would be wonderful if we both got into the band together. What fun we would have travelling the world!
When we arrived, I told the band how much I loved to sing and that singing was my life, my calling, my forte. They looked pretty keen to hear me sing so I launched in to one of their best-known songs and sang my heart out for them. I certainly held nothing back and showed them just what I had.
When I finished, they just looked at me and appeared to be somewhat stunned. Even Gui was staring, and she has heard me sing so many times. I guess that I had made a real impression. They then asked Gui if she also wanted to audition and when she hesitated, they actually seemed a bit relieved. My audition must have gone even better than I thought (and I thought it was pretty good). But I wasn’t going to let Gui get out of this (we had made a deal), so I dragged her up to the microphone. I felt a bit sorry for her as she looked very nervous, but then she closed her eyes and started singing one of the band’s other songs (clever Gui knew it wouldn’t be fair to sing the same song as I did). As she sang, the band members all seemed to sit up straighter, and they all started smiling to one another. When she finished, the band rushed over to her and told her that their song had never sounded like that before. They told their assistant to cancel the rest of the auditions as they had found what they were looking for.
Gui looked at me and I could see she was thinking about something. Then she walked over to the band members and, while I couldn’t quite hear clearly, it sounded like she said something about us being a package and if they wanted her, I was a part of the deal. Well, quite a bit of discussion followed but finally, the band came over to me and said “welcome aboard”.
So now my dream has come true, and I am a singer in a great band. They picked Gui to be the lead singer with me providing backing vocals and I’m okay with that as I think Gui may be a bit of a better a singer than I am. Anyway, I heard the band members talking about me once and they were saying that I look good on stage and that as a singer, I’m a great dancer. I’m not sure what that means but it sounds okay.
We have been “on the road” now for a few months and everything is just as wonderful as I imagined. I love performing, but there is just one thing I still find a bit perplexing. I wonder why my microphone doesn’t appear to be switched on (or even plugged in as I have found), but what the heck, I get to sing. Who needs a microphone anyway!
