Hello, my name is Rsy and I don’t like to waste time in silly chatter, so anything I tell you about myself will be very brief.
I was born and raised with my two brothers, one older, one younger. My father was very interested in them and would engage them in all manner of educational discussions. I would listen and absorb, not being welcome to engage directly. My father wasn’t cruel, it’s just that he thought all females wanted was to get married and have children, which was pretty true with regard to my mother.
I, however, turned out to have an enquiring mind and a thirst for knowledge. I excelled at school and was subsequently accepted into university by scholarship. I’m not sure if my parents would have paid for me to attend if I hadn’t been awarded the scholarship as my parent’s views hadn’t been affected by my academic success.
I moved away from my home to attend a university in another town. Being a university town, most of the inhabitants were people of my own age, or mature age students who had moved with their families to study in their chosen fields.
The scholarship provided very basic accommodation in a shared residential facility. The students I shared with were all young and, except for the fact that they were attending university, I thought them a silly, giggling but well-meaning bunch. I strongly resisted their attempts to go “out on the town” and quite frankly, I enjoyed the peace and quiet of the empty unit when they left. But I was also aware that they were being kind, trying to include me in some fun. So, one night I agreed to accompany them, after all, I thought it incumbent on me to fully explore university life at least once.
It was a bad as I feared! I would have been happy to just sit in the background and watch but too many overfriendly young men tried to engage me in conversation. I began to think that I would have to find an excuse to leave when a young man appeared from the background and asked if I would like to leave and if he could walk me safely home. In truth, the university campus and its accommodation were only a short walk, and I was quite happy to go on my own. But then I looked in his eyes and I could see that he was feeling the same as me.
By the time we had walked to my place, in comfortable silence, I knew that I had found a kindred spirit. Even our study subjects are complementary, and we can spend pleasurable time in each other’s company while pursuing our academic studies.
I am the happiest I have ever been in my life, following my academic dreams and spending time with my partner in silent conversation.
