AXL

Here is Axl, our look-out and forward hand. Like all his family before him, he was a grower of root vegetables and so is used to working physically hard all day in all sorts of weather. He was an able student in building the boat and has proven to be just as able a sailor. He told me that he had special reason for coming other than just a desire to see and learn new things. You see, he thinks he may be in love with someone who has also chosen to come on board. Nobody but me knows about Axl’s feelings for Lup Trl, including Lup too, I suspect. He confided in me as we built the boat that his feelings for Lup were very confusing. Lup is so different from the pretty, giggling village girls that he thought he was attracted to, and truth be told, Axl was considered quite a catch by them. In fact, Axl is not even sure if Lup is male or female. But over the last year, he has found that he has been making every excuse he can think of to be in Lup’s company. Lup is the town baker so Axl has had to take up jogging in order to work off the cream buns and honey cakes he buys in order to see Lup. He doesn’t know whether Lup would ever be interested in him, but he does know that he wants to be wherever Lup is.
